2001 Seoul Designer's Charter - the text

2001 SEOUL INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER'S DECLARATION

Where we stand:

1. ID no longer focuses solely on the industrial production method
2. ID is no longer mainly interested in visually impressive objects.
3. ID does not only aspire to material well being any longer.
4. ID is no longer obsessed by the 'new'.
5. ID does not confuse the state of comfort with the absence of physical stimulation.
6. ID does not treat our environment as isolated from ourselves.
7. ID can no longer offer itself as a vehicle to satisfy endless invented needs.


Where we want to go:

1. ID values the question of 'why' beyond 'how'.
2. ID employs the progress of technology for the betterment of the human condition.
3. ID restores the lost meaning of integrity in society.
4. ID promotes a dialogue between diverse cultures.
5. ID is a sensual science nourishing human potential and dignity.
6. ID searches for the full harmony of body and mind.
7. ID regards both the artificial and natural environments as stakeholders in the celebration of life.


Whom we want to be to get there:

1. Industrial Designers are messengers of harmony between the different forces of life.
2. Industrial Designers inspire users to interact with the designed object in ways unique to each being.
3. Industrial Designers open the door toward the existential and creative experience of the user.
4. Industrial Designers need to continually educate themselves in order to re-discover the significance of our daily life.
5. Industrial Designers pursue the way of sustainable development.
6. Industrial Designers take care of people and nature before seeking to please industry and capital.
7. Industrial Designers are part of the creative team who choose the direction of the future.

Please examine this contents of 2001 SEOUL Industrial Designer's Declaration, and if you consent to the messages of ours, please send your name, nation, occupation, and organization to us by the 20th of September. The Organizing Committee is continuously making corrections; however, the core contents will be the same. Above all, the Organizing Committee is planning to produce the poster and to publish the annotated little booklet for 2001 SEOUL Industrial Designer's Declaration. Every name of each participant's will be inscribed on the poster as well as in the booklet, which will be distributed through out the world.
